how exactly do you isolate a solo like that?

I think that's the actual guitar track off In The Dark. You can't do that on a full band mix ...

I thought there was some studio stuff From In The dark on the archive but I cant find it ....

I like this idea. Now I just have to learn a solo that I probably should have learned a long time ago!

Okay, I've tried to learn the solo--or at least a proxy for it. Link below is my attempt. I apologize for the intermittent clipping. I tried this a bunch of times and I guess it's my (limited) recording software combined with my less-than-Jerry picking dynamics, but I can't NOT clip while I'm recording But I'm out of patience to keep fooling with it.

Anyway, I'd be interested in constructive comments from those with better ears about how I can improve the tone... more (less) reverb/mids/treble, etc etc. Listening to the Jerry version his tone is just "crispier" and I can't get there. Maybe if it were just a lot louder (but then I'd have even more clipping problems...I tried). Again, constructive criticism encouraged!

It sounds really good and you play it very cleanly ... much more cleanly than I do.

I think Garcia's is brighter overall ... you almost want it to sound too bright and then it's there on the recording.

Can you detail your guitar and your rig?

Agreed that mine is somehow too dark, just doesn't sparkle quite right ... some of that, I think, has to be my miserable recording gear/technique. It's just about all I can do to get any sound into my computer at all! Any tips on changes I might make??

Gear is very Jerry: SMS -> MC2105 -> JBL E-120 (single). Guitar is a Moriarty Wolf, tiger-style wiring, SMS about 10:30 on gain, dimed treble, dumped bass, 1:00 mids.

Below is a long clip of noodling along with a looped segment of a Playin jam...I did it to hear how the same settings sounded in context of a GD mix. I think it sounds closer to the mark but still missing that elusive crunchy sparkle

Yeah, but you play it well! In my defense, I just learned it this weekend and my phrasing lacks something to be desired...just wanted to get something down for the tone test. Hopefully, I get more natural & looser on the solo with practice!

Okay, I re-recorded again (link below) after figuring out some tricks to better deal with the clipping (only a couple of minor spots here that are a problem). Still doesn't have the "presence" of Garcia's. Not sure if I could get it any brighter than this with my rig...and my recording equipment is no doubt draining highs. But still it's tough for me to reach Jerry's level of crispy breakup throughout.

Garcia "practiced" it for 5 years before recording it for the album...

I was kind of waiting on my new guitar (still in the shop) and I needed to work out the solo at least to some extent .... but here you can compare the mesa 50/50 with the new Quilter MP 200 being used as the power amp

Okay, I'm back again. I've been trying to work on my recording technique to (hopefully) improve results. Additionally, I've changed mic to the "Jerry-approved" MD421. I think I've got clipping under control, but there is some slight weirdness in the recording that I haven't totally figured out. I originally thought I was getting digital artifacts but now I actually think the sound is coming from my rig due to some kind of room resonance that creates some unpleasant "sizzling" overtones in the neighborhood of lower register B notes. If it ain't one thing it's another

Anyway, tone critiques welcome. Still not the crispiness of Jerry but at least this recording has a little more presence. Still searching...

Hey all, I was just recording a couple originals for my band and figured I'ld get this tracked out since I already set up the recording stuff. 1987 fender champ (red knob), all stock, 1986 ( I think) MIJ Fender Tele, middle position (blend of neck and bridge). treble pinned, bass on 1. reverb almost pinned. tone and volume pinned. This is a good comparison to see how close regular old stock fender gear sounds to the real deal. I have other jerrified gear I will bust out some day for a comparison.
