OBEL wiring confusion

I am putting the finishing touches on my strat, but all of the wiring diagrams show 2 TRS jacks.

I had always thought that there would be one TRS jack (for the effects) and one TS jack for the output.

Am I just stupid?

Isn't one as a true TRS 3 unique interfaces while the other uses just 2 but the 3rd to sense if there is a cable?

You need a TRS jack for the OBEL send/return.
The other jack is TRS because the ring connection is used to complete the buffer circuit's 9V supply when you insert a standard mono jack in there (presuming you are using a buffer that is).

Without it you'll be continually draining the 9v battery

The TRS jack basically becomes a "switch". When you put the mono plug into the TRS jack, the "Ring" and the "Sleeve" connect and complete the circuit (I think it's the ground for the battery).

You could also wire an extra switch somewhere to do the same thing. It would basically turn your guitar on and off.

Yup. This is exactly how nearly ALL guitar pedals operate as well. The battery ground becomes connected to ground thru the ring terminal via the sleeve of the mono guitar cord plug when inserted. When removed, the batteries don't drain.
