I just found this board, and it looks pretty sweet!
I had an epiphany on Sept 7th, sit down for a little story.
I was out at a yearly charity benefit festival in the Shawnee with a bunch of great bands from the area and tons of great folks. As usual, midnight Saturday rolled around. Two of our crew had their guitars with them, and the neighbors came by for late night dinner.
I like to cook up a huge pot of homemade Indian curry on Saturday nights out at festivals. Brings the whole family home.
So anyway, this one neighbor fellow grabbed a guitar and started busting out some Dead tunes.
A couple hours prior, I was down at the stage and had a passing thought about "someday I need to get serious on the music tip." One of the bands offers to let me sit in on harmonica for a few songs, but I'm out of practice over the last couple years.
The thought returned. This time, it was framed in a big crazy "greater good" feeling I had in my head...hard to see where the heck communal warm fuzzys came from on a night like that, what a mystery
Anyway, on the ride home, I couldn't get it out of my head. Back at home, I couldn't get it out of my head.
So I borrowed an acoustic from my buddy with tons of music equipment, most of which is in our basement. I got that within the week.
So I'm on 2 1/2 weeks of playing 1-4 hours per night now...fingertips looking ratty, but not hurting anymore, chord shapes sticking in my head, etc.
Wow...I'd tried to learn guitar as a kid, never worked. Now I'm 28, and I realized all I needed was some divine intervention and a few tabbed out songs with chord charts to really get it to "click?"
So, I went out and got a Micheal Kelly V5 yesterday. It was the best sounding $200 acoustic in the local store. (No, I refuse to go to guitar center or order an axe online without playing it)
I strung it with elixir extra-lights...man...I'm already thinking "man, this thing needs some beefier strings!"

Amazing what a little inspiration can do for ya. So far, I'm working through (in order of learning)
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Flaming Lips)
Loser
Chan Chan (Buena Vista Social Club / Companyt Segundo)...rocking the chords for an awesome endless jam with the "good" guitarist
And last night I started on Althea- just pickin' it, not gonna do fingerpicking for a while.

And my favorite hiking season is upon us, nice and chilly these days in the midwest.
