Nick Drake - surely his work would fit being away from home for a year or two.
Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 String Guitar

Very Early George Benson
A good recording of Beethoven's (sp?) Pastoral; I believe this is the 5th or 6th Symphony

i was told to check out leo kottke several times, so i looked him on on youtube.....i couldnt find anything good. maybe a suggestion?

IMO - the most accessible/full band/vocals included/Dead-like Leo is his recent stuff with Mike Gordon ('Clone' and particularly '66 Steps'). There is lots of singing and the skill involved with the playing is obvious. I may be in the minority but I think Leo's singing voice is great (see bellow). Keller Williams listed '66 Steps' as his favorite album last year (year before?).
For pure Leo, it would be tough to overlook '6&12 String Guitar' as that is a classic at this point. Leo was only 24 when he recorded that though (in 1971?) so he has grown over the years. I always liked 'A Shout Toward Noon' but there is a lot of stuff. 'Essential' would be another good place to start being a best of album.
I've checked youtube for Leo stuff as well and its pretty sparse -- google-video has more stuff, but still pretty minimal.
SEE HIM LIVE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE! The guy is a magician on the guitar, and funny as hell.
