Trying to tame an Ultra Linear Twin - help please

Postby FretfulDave » Wed Apr 25, 2012 11:50 am

Hey all. I got a friend who has a Fender Ultra Linear Twin Reverb that @ 135 watts is just too dang loud for his bandmates and probably a lot of other gear on the planet. The amp is an absolute beast.

So wondering if the idea of pulling two power tubes to drop it down to around 65 watts (still a lot of power) will work as seems to be done with other types of Twins. I have read a bit on this and it seems that one can pull the #1 and #4 power tubes to reduce the power output of the amp. I also read where once you do that, you need to double the impedance of the speakers you connect up to the amp. I am looking for validation of this concept with an Ultra Linear, alternate ideas or any other pearls of wisdom the extremely knowledgeable and experienced players on this board might provide to reduce the sheer loudness of this amp. My friend and I would be VERY grateful.

Many thanks.

Dave

Cant go much lower than 2 ....
Im thinking that removing some power tubes = lower wattage ( ? ) I could run the amp at a volume setting where the amp could open up a bit ... feel like I aint getting all the goodness out of the amp at the vol 2 setting ...
I shoulda got the SMS - doh !

I always played mine at 3 or 4. Master volume on 10. I guess I'm just used to louD!

You can remove one of each pair of the power tubes, but I'm pretty sure you have to disconnect one speaker to maintain the correct ohms. After reading the posts in the links below, seems to me you do not have to disconnect one speaker because the amp can take it and by not disconnecting one speaker it will lower the volume more!
