He was a real gentleman too, about 15 years ago the banjo player in my bluegrass band was in Nashville and wanted to go see where Earl lived - when he got there he saw no big security gate so he drove up to his door and knocked. Earl answered the door and Tim explained that he'd been a fan since he was a boy and that his inspiration moved him to learn the banjo. Earl invited him into his home and signed a couple of autographs and couldn't have been nicer to some random dude walking up to his house.
