The Kind - Godspell Musical - Nov 3-6 & 10-12

Whew! Finally getting close to showtime. We're doing the pit for the musical Godspell for a theater company that my wife is involved with. It's good for me to push outside of my musical comfort zone and force myself to read music again. I'm pit directing which is a kind of a pain but it's fun to get to tell my band mates what to do . . . and they actually have to do it  We're also pretty slack about rehearsal (only a couple this century) and since we're working in a new bass player it's been good to get some time to work with him.

The songs are pretty cool and I have a fair bit of latitude to shape them. Some crazy time changes - the first 4 measures of one of the tunes are 7/4, 7/4, 5/8, and 6/8. Woo-hoo. Finding some places where we can have some fun and do some jamming. I'm gonna try to get some video . . .

I didn't know they did that tune :) if I had a recording. . .

It's only a 10+ hour drive :-)

We might get some cast members out to our gig tomorrow and do Light of the World

I put this up on the rukind taper section in a jerry thread like 18 months ago, it is still here though:

here ya go!!!

--------------------------OK I am going to put my money (or bandwidth resources) where my mouth is.

I just put the aforementioned Garcia/Saunders 6/3/75 on my FTP:

simply right click on this link and choose "save as" and check it out.

Beware these are Flac files so it about 888 megabytes.

Set 1:
d1t01 - It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry
d1t02 - I Feel Like Dynamite
d1t03 - Day By Day
d1t04 - Tore Up Over You
d1t05 - Going, Going, Gone

Set 2:
d2t01 - Harder They Come
d2t02 - Bossa Martin
d2t03 - Someday Baby
d2t04 - //Tough Mama
d2t05 - How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)

Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders:
* Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
* Merl Saunders - keyboards, vocals
* John Kahn - bass
* Martin Fierro - saxophone, flute
* ??? ????? - drums

Mastering Notes:
-- d1t01 - Tape fades in, then taper equipment problems at 02:11 where recording is cut; there is about a minute of intrumentals missing along with some Jerry vocals. Cut was cross-faded with the remainder of the song and kept as one track.
-- d2t04 - Tape flip cross-faded.

Notes:
-- This is listed as Garcia and Saunders since it has been confirmed Ron Tutt did not play drums at this show; however, it is not certain who did.
-- d1t03 - Based on currently available information "Day By Day" (instrumental) was played just two other times at a show.
-- d2t01 - Notable feedback at about 00:43 and 01:16.
-- d2t04 - According to db.etree "Tough Mama" is not part of the originally circulating Menke-Falanga taped source (shnid=4477). However, it is included in the db.etree show listing set list (shows_key=4888). It is not present in the set list shown at TheJerrrySite.com.
-- d2t04 - "Tough Mama" fades in, with just a few seconds of music missing.

Taper Talk:
-- Question - "Was Bob [Menke] friendly enough with [Steve] Parish to be allowed stage lip mic mounting?"
-- Answer - "We had no permission. We snuck the equipment in and were near the front of the line so we could get the spot. In early 1976 at Sophie's (before the veunue became Keystone Palo Alto) we tried the same thing and 2 things happened. Ramroad cut our mic cable during the first set and Parish threatened to break the 152 over our heads if he saw us trying to tape the 2nd set. Hope that answers your question."

Special Note:
-- These are recordings done by Bob Menke and Louis Falanga at the Berkeley Keystone, made in May and June of 1975, that MOTB will be turning out, the subsequent Grateful Dead and related recordings are dedicated to Bob Menke's mom, Connie, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer. As you listen to what are certainly the most unique - if possibly not some of the best - audience recordings of Jerry Garcia in his prime, please send out healing vibes and prayers to Connie any way you see fit. We are all pulling for her, so please keep her in your hearts and prayers. The MOTB Team

We found a way to sneak some GD into the play. They want us to play something "ethereal" for the Jesus monologue at the start. . .Dark Star. We also play a party song every night so we'll pick a different backbeat tune to play each night - Big River tonight :-)

Hey all! - We got through the first week of shows - we set attendance records for a week and for a single night for the theater company. It's been a blast getting back into doing this after an 8-9 year absence. We managed to sneak in some GD music - we were asked to play something ethereal to play while the house is filling up - couldn't think of anything better than Dark Star :) we also have a small dance party scene and we've done Good Lovin' and Shakedown St.

Here's a couple of mp3s from an audience recording of Light of the World and the Finale:

I highly recommend doing this, it's great practice for reading music and playing something fairly structured something that we don't do a lot of :-)

yeah, Martin plays a smoking sax solo - I've been listening to it on my drive to the shows - good for getting me pumped up - thanks!

I highly recommend this to everyone out there. Especially since we usually play a pretty loose show - to have to hit cues, not veer too far from the page, be in a support role, read music, etc. It's a lot of fun and a good challenge.
