Greek 6-16-85

24 years ago today was one of my all-time favorite shows I never saw. I've worn out my cassette of the 2nd set after listening to it endlessly. The Scarlet>Fire is one of my all-time favorites and I've stolen lots of licks and riffs from Brent from this version. This show often gets noted for the Cryptical breakout which is cool, but EVERYTHING on it is excellent IMHO. I especially love the Samson opener,S>Fire, TOO and WharfRat...Phil goes a little nuts throughout and employs the crowd a bit in WRat. First set has a great 80s FOTD amoungst other jems. This is the third day of a 3 show run (6/14 and 6/15 are also great) and this show was a matinee with a 3pm start....6/14 features a Dew opener with Phil making weird animal sounds. Worth listening to just for the novelty.

One of my least favorite years, Jerry's voice was horrific , but that was a great run of shows

Ya, sometimes it's impossible for me to get beyond that voice, kills it for me. The playing is good though.

These were my first Greek shows!! One of my first West coast shows all by my lonesome boogying barefoot atop those goddawful Eucalyptus buttons and hoping for a "breakout" only to get Cryptical. I loved the 15th as well, and have always had a board copy of the second set that still makes the hair stand up on my arms. Jerry's voice was fine for me, no regrets! Those were some fine times: eating at Long Life, drinking at Triple Rock, staying on University at some Pink Flamingo hotel, standing on the stage of the Greek's a couple of days before since the place used to be open when there were no shows, and running into people that would become some of my best friends for the rest of my life....all new to this young boy from NY via North Carolina...thanks for the memories this show evoked.
