6/18/74 Eyes...

The Dead at the top of their game. I've had various copies of this going all the way back to a teenager. Just gave it a fresh listen while trying to do some work and had to stop working. Just got sucked right into all the stuff going on. Is this the zenith, so to speak, of Eyes of the World. Every part of it is sick. Vocals, tempo, tone of instruments, arrangement.....

Right from the top the way Kreutzmann kicks it in

The main thing that jumps out is Kreutzmann's steady 8th notes on the hi-hat. He never wavers and if you listen it sounds like the band is strictly playing to just that. Weaving in and out of the hi-hat rhythm....

I love this wild Louisville show overall (and had an awed sense of the history going into Freedom Hall 4/9/89), but the Eyes itself probably doesn't quite crack my top ten 73-74 versions. To which I would hastily add that 73 & 74 Eyes are in a different class than later versions imho, and bear no comparison. 10/19/74 and 8/6/74 pretty much rule the roost. My highlights from 6/18 are maybe the Loose Lucy and def the WRS and the huge jam with the It's a Sin.

Definitely a sick eyes. Same with 10-19. But I wouldnt say theyre the best. 9-7-73 tops the cake for me. The jam at the end has so many different dimensions to it.

I love the '74 show with the Eyes > Big River segue. Is it 6/16? Anyway, that countrified, psychadelic, bluegrass jazz is fantastic from that show. If I remember correctly, it also has a killer morning dew w/ some great phil lines permeating thru and thru.

6/18/74 has been one of my favorite shows since I first heard it. Keith was on fire during this period. He shines throughout the eyes. Hell, everyone in the band was on.

Yeah, I guess I didn't mean to say this was the best Eyes, I just got excited after giving it a fresh listen. The latest round of MSR transfers has been exceptional and this Louisville show just got that much better. I think it's the intro though for sure that seems so hopping. Billy really does a cool kick, almost this John Bonham rock thing, with the band jumping onto the new "one" at the head so tightly.

This show does not let up. The Other One from this show is what keeps me coming back to it. Billy's drumming here reminds me alot of the late great Mitch Mitchell. Clean and quick. Kick ass one second-delicate as a feather the next. This show is in my top five
