Minimal Donna

Minimal Donna

Postby b weird » Wed Apr 30, 2008 4:05 pm

Does anyone know of any 72-74 with VERY minimal Donna? I think that's what really turns me off about post early 71 shows; Donna and her out of tune yodeling/howling. So if anyone could sugest any minimal Donna shows I'd be very happy. Thanks.

Besides stuff from the Euro 72 tour, I think you're stuck with her. Sorry?

There are a few shows in either late November or early December '73 when she was knocked up and didn't attend. I'll have to check dates...pretty sure one of them is a Dicks Pick.

I was wondering the other day: wouldn't it be possible to just erase donna from some of the old shows?

I don't know much about the "re-mastering" process, but it seems that they can do a lot with editing out unwanted sounds. Seeing as how she's not really in the same tones as the rest of the band (which i guess is the main problem), it shouldn't be too hard to isolate her and remove it.

OK, here we go....a start anyway,

On Dicks Picks 14, 11-30-73 and 12-2-73, Donna is not given any credits.

On DP1, 12-19-73, It says on the credits that she is giving birth. Although I thought she gave birth to a bowling ball during every "Playin'" she performed on.

Not sure about the shows in between, I must do more research.

I doubt you could remove her entirely from the 2 tracks but probably on the 16 tracks (they did remove her or diminish her on Europe '72). She often shared a mic with Bobby so that could be problematic. All I know is if they could there would suddenly be a shitload of really hot GSET's from that era that I could listen to without cringing.

I believe there are also some late '71/early '72 shows that have Keith but are "Donnaless". DP2 comes to mind. Again...more research needed.

Keith joined 10/19/71 ... Donna sang with them at one or two shows in December 71 and offically joined at the March 72 NY shows , right before the Europe tour.

Other than that, late Nov-Dec 73 she sat out the tour because of third trimester pregnancy.

Maybe I'm either a hopeless romantic or a sentimental fool, but the notion of cutting Donna out of the mix of a show is as bad as cutting any of the other band members out.

Seriously, would anyone call for cutting Jerry out of some of his worst shows (of which there were MANY)?

The band is the band.. it is how they wished to be presented. Who the fuck are we to call their calls into question. Don't like Donna Jean... find another era.

While I fully understand the issues with Donna Jean, and know how off-tune she could be... what right do we have to re-master shows? The Boyz were magnanimous enough to let us have what music they made free of any restrictions (until the recent Bobby power grab)... you fuck with the recordings, you fuck with the historical record of the band we all adore. Warts and all.

Sorry... just my $.03 (adjusted for inflation).
Seems like I've been here before...
