Musical Theory Abound!!!

Postby LazyLightnin » Fri Jun 15, 2007 2:00 pm

trust me dude i know, theres little or no communication, alot of our bass player freezing and staring into the crowd, that sorta thing. last gig my lead player messes up on "down on the corner",(i know it sounds ridiculous to mess that up) stops playing and starts yelling "Stop! stop!" OMFG i almost lost it. we heard a woman in the audience say she wanted her money back  i had to re-explain the first rule of showbiz which is "the show must go on". i have no problem playing off mistakes, just make it look like you meant to do so, or just give a big smile, might get some smiles back.

beleive it or not but i do better for myself with an acoustic down at the beach, love to attract a crowd, love to talk to the public. gets my blood goin, reminds me im alive lol 8)

 Ugh...I can't believe he yelled STOP! ....what in the world??? Tell that rookmeister to get back to the 'garten. Kinder, that is. :x

How do you side-step that one anyways? You're totally right though, you gotta play through that shit. Hey, just remember, most of the people out there listening can't do what you do, and they're all as human as you are. Point is, everyone makes mistakes, but being good enough and "brave" enough (for lack of a better word) to get on stage takes a lot of work, and most people respect that.

a bunch of 80's crap

usual cheesy cover band montages
the gambler
jolene

Um too the fellow that plays cortez the killer...
I have a ?, how does neil play that little riff after the last chorus. Usually about 3/4 of the way thru he plays this quick little palm muted riff that I can't get. Only plays it like 4 times then hes done with it. It's not on the album. But it is on every live version I've heard. I realize that is vague. But if ya could ease my mind........ Thanks

set list

Postby lyghtningod » Mon Jun 25, 2007 10:14 pm

cool topic

My band has its second paid gig on 7 July. We are putting together our set list. This is what we're looking at:

Black Magic Woman
Mean Woman Blues
Taking Care of Business
Come On original
Brown Eyed Girl
R.O.C.K.
Louie Louie

Twist and Shout
Cheese Burger
Margaritaville
Hotel California
Smile Beam original
Rick’s Backyard original
Dock of the Bay
Under the Boardwalk
I’m A Believer
Folsom Prison Blues
Already Gone
Take the Money and Run
Can’t Always Get What
Great Divide original
2 AM original

Of course, 'paid' is a relative term. We'll get about $7 an hour, after taking into account load in and out and the two hour playing time. But...I am soooo excited to have the gig, I don't care how much it pays.

well we mostly covered red hot chili peppers prior to our singer becoming a keyboardist so they're still the dominating force in our setlist but phish and dead are creeping in

Rolling Sly Stone- RHCP
Californicaion- RHCP
Brandy- RHCP cover of someone else (forgot who)
Guerilla Radio- Rage Against the Machine
Fire on the Mt- duh
If you Have to Ask>Funk Jam-RHCP but our funk jam is more band based then their ok you solo then i solo then we end, crap
You Really Got Me- The Kinks
Cant Stop-RHCP
Tweezer-Phish
2001-Phish
Venice Queen-RHCP
Twist-Phish
Maze-Phish
Born Under Punches- Talking Heads

startin at tweezer are songs we're trying to break in, not final or anything, usually to fill time at practices we just open air jam aka ii yell key and everyone makes stuff up, lol but i doubt that can be on a setlist

Hey lostsailor great setlist. Could you by chance tab out Elko for me. I've been trying to figure that tune out for a long time and haven't been able to get it. I was excited to see your band plays it. Many thanks

I second this notion!!! I posted what I had so far in another thread under RRE General Discussion, but here's what I've got so far (note: not all lyrics are right, so please feel free to correct them!):

Code: Select all
ELKO
By Railroad Earth

Key of G (or Gm…)?
D mixolydian scale?

INTRO

VERSE 1 & 2

Pull in from the desert road
Pop your wagon, drop your load
And shut her down
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

Been a long hot desert ride
Wha (???), such big river devils slide, (???)
In Elko
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

CHORUS:

Poor boys and gamblers,
Row dogs and ramblers
Shuttin’ her down for the night
Winners and losers,
Hookers and boozers
Draw like a bug to the light

JAM OVER 2 VERSES

VERSE 3 & 4

Grab a whisky from the bar
Sit down to your deck of cards
And throw your chips in
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

Emerald Misty, Violet Blue
Got a winkin’ eye on you
And all night to wait
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

CHORUS:

Poor boys and gamblers,
Row dogs and ramblers
Shuttin’ her down for the night
Winners and losers,
Hookers and cruisers
Crawl in through the Elko night

INTRO RIFF x1

BRIDGE:

Oh Lord, oh lord
Been so long on this dusty road, on papa
I need a leg to stand on
I need a card, I need a card
Hit me Lord, but not too hard, oh mama
I need a winning hand

INTRO (full)

JAM OVER 8 VERSES

VERSE 5 & 6

Morning coffee, steak and eggs
Stretch your legs and get down the road
And roll in
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

She’s a camp town only??? on the UP line
Always shows up right on time
In Elko
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

CHORUS:

Poor boys and gamblers,
Row dogs and ramblers
Shuttin’ her down for the night
Winners and losers,
Hookers and boozers
Draw like a bug to the light

Poor boys and gamblers,
Row dogs and ramblers
Shuttin’ her down for the night
Winners and losers,
Hookers and cruisers
Crawl in through the Elko night

BRIDGE: x2

Oh Lord, oh lord
Been so long on this dusty road, on mama
I need a lick of fin?
I need a card, I need a card
Hit me Lord, but not too hard, oh papa
I need a winning hand

RIFF OVER CHORUS, end with BASS ON INTRO x1

Main Riff/Intro

e ---------------------------|
B ---5^7--5---------------5--|
G -----------7-----4—4^5-----|
D --------------7------------|
A ---------------------------|
E ---------------------------|

e -----------------------------------------|
B --5^7--5---------------------------------|
G ----------7-----4-4^5----4-4^5-----------|
D -------------7--------7--------7p5-------|
A -----------------------------------7p5---|
E -----------------------------------------|

For the "poor boys and gamblers, row dogs and ramblers...." part it sounds like the single notes (that he is singing at least) are:

F#   F#   F#  G   A      Bm  Bm   A   F#  Em
Poor boys and gam-blers, row dogs and ram-blers
G    G    G   A    G   Em  D
Shut-ting her down for the night

The F# may be an F#m or even an F#dim (though I don't think so), but it's really bugging me that I can't figure it out. It's probably very easy and I'm just making it a lot harder than it should be, but any help would be great
