how can u tell if your saddle is bone??

i once took a guitar to have the action slightly lowered and while it was there i wanted the saddle replaced with a custom bone saddle ... the man said the one on it was bone...so to try to avoid this happening again...anyone have any tips on identifying what my saddle is constructed from?? ...

maybe even a sight with detailed specs on my guitar...

Warning: If you mess this procedure up you might damage the finish of your guitar...

1) Straighten out a paper clip.
2) Hold Paper clip in pliers or vice grips.
3) Heat up paper clip over a candle until it is red hot.
4) Carefully touch the saddle with the paper clip.

If it melts it is some type of plastic and not bone. Do not touch the guitar with the paper clip..

dude that is pretty extreme....

if this tends to be the only way id at least suggest removing the saddle from the guitar before trying it

If you truelly are Doc Watson, I would suggest allowing someone else to hold the pliers.

BTW, next to Jerry, Doc is my greatest influence. If you can find a recording of Doc and Friends from Telluride 86' be sure and check it out..
