I usually start out by getting familiar with the song, then depending on how simple the song seems, I start listening to the bass line. With NRPS this should probably give you a good start.
You can probably pick up most of the root notes in the chords out of the bass line. Then once you figure out the chords, you can start looking at the relationships between them to see what key the song is in, which will help you find a scale for the melody line, solos, etc.
