California Earthquake

Well, it's not tab, just lyrics & changes, but it's a simple song. Really blew me away though when I saw it back in '89 (right after the earthquake that inturrupted the A's-Giants World Series) in the good 'ol Philthy Rectum.

This is the only Grateful Dead tune I've heard of that wasn't transcribed here (great job BTW, and thanks!) so I thought I'd add it. They may have done it a few other times, but not many.

California Earthquake (None, performed 10/20/89, closed 1st set)
By ???????

G C G
There was a California earthquake in the year of 83
D G D
And it blew the living daylights out of the Owens county seat
G C G
Not a building was left standing when the dust had cleared away
C G D G D
And there moaned a mighty rumble all the way to San Andre

Sherman Buck was driving his old mule into town
When a big one came and shook so hard it knocked him to the ground
And it opened up a hole so deep he thought his time was up
And it swallowed up that poor old mule and just missed Sherman Buck

Chorus:
C G C G
California earthquake you just don?t know what you?ve done
D
You may throw us in the ocean but you?ll never make us run
G C G
You?re a partner to the devil but we ain?t afraid of him
C G D G
And we?ll build ourselves another town so you can tear it down again

Then came the quake of 99 that leveled Mission Creek
The earth was like an ocean churning waves of twenty feet
Lord it sounded like a thousand trains was screaming underground
All the way to San Joachin, they heard that mournful sound

Chorus

Then came one day the holocaust to San Francisco bay
A thousand walls came tumbling down like Jericho that day
And the only things the earthquake missed a holy fire consumed
And left only smoke and ashes of the dreams that they had burned

Chorus

Coda:
G C G D G
And we?ll build outrselves another town so you can tear it down again

C Em D G

RRRrrr. the chords didn't post right

Postby Mr. Benson » Wed Aug 04, 2004 4:22 pm

I tried to line up the chord changes to the right words, but it took out all the spaces when I posted it.

Here's how the chords should fall in the first verse and chorus (if it hits between syllables I just put the part of the word where thye change falls, like the "Dre" in "San Andre"

Hope this makes sense:

Verse:

G There
C earthquake
G year
D blew
G daylights
D Owens
G building
C dust
G 'way
C moaned
G rumble
D way
G 'dre

Chorus:

C California
G don't
C what
G done
D never
G partner
C we
G him
C build
G 'nother
D tear
G 'gain
