Good 80's shows?

i've been listening to truckin to buffalo, july 4, 1989-particularly the cold rain and snow. Love the bands sound. I've got access to tons of dates but don't know which to download. Any suggestions for good dead shows from that era...1980's ish?

They didn't play a bad show from spring '89 to summer '90. I'm not kidding. You may not like the list, but the overall perfomances are top shelf to as good as it gets. Pick a list that suits your fancy and go w/ it.

A great show from the 1980's that comes to mind is 10/12/84, Augusta ME. I seem to have misplaced my copy.

One of my favorites - 9-23-87 Philly Spectrum. Had this on tape in '88, and, from its source to me, it got sped up a few beats, which was kinda neat. The coherence in Jerry's solo's seems more apparent when listening at that faster speed. Reminds me of something Jerry said about listening to Phil's bass lines by themselves and sped up a good bit - the coherence and ideas became more evident (or something to that effect).

And a personal bias choice - my first show! 6-26-88 Pisstburgh. Really well played, with a kind of odd (but good) restrained quality to it.

For further listening enjoyment, the Scarlet-Fire-Estimated in this Saratoga show is excellent, with the whole show being pretty hot. To my taste, this Scarlet-Fire rivals Hamilton 3-22-90 as the best ever. BTW, that Hamilton show is just Jesus on wheels too. We all looked at each other after the first set and agreed it seemed like a second set, and it just got better from there.

9/14/82.....one of the best i saw in the 80's. Hard to rally around some 80's stuff because Garcia was in bad shape for most of them. This show has what i feel is the hottest 2nd set. particularly the jam out of space in iko. Rare to hear just garcia and Weir jamming alone like that. Check it out, think you'll dig it.....

3/22/90 is very good but far from a BOAT Scarlet> Fire imho. For me the 90 and later S>F's were just too slow-paced. I was there, and it's not even in my top 5 *attended*. Those would consist of (in no particular order, and also submitted as Good 80's shows):

8/6/89 Sacramento, CA
6/30/87 Maple, ONT
4/15/88 Rosemont, IL (possibly one of the shortest OAT but very tight and energetic... plus- and this is huge- it opened the show with me in the front row between Bob and Jerry)

brent does a a rare opening marimba bit on the Scarlet intro and from there it just takes off! iirc this S>F clocks in at about 30 minutes!

The Pre drums segment this night of S>F, Est>Eyes clocks in at over an hour and it is pretty focused the whole time.

You gotta listen to the Scarlet>Fire from 3/31/84 if you haven't before. The transition jam is amazing.

I love the '80's but probably because I was on tour for most of it! My faves are tainted because of the "I was there" factor, but here are a few (sorry dates are not my strong point!)

'83 Saratoga show. Great Scarlet/Fire and one of my favorite Dew's of the '80's
'85 Greek. The one with China/Rider, Terrapin and the encore of She Belongs To Me. The board tape is a great mix and this is one I listen to rather often.
'85 Richmond. They put it out on Dick's Pick's because it was insane that night.
'85 Hershey. Another fun show, although somewhat short. I also like the quality of the mix on tape/cd. And a good Dew!
'85 Cayuhoga. Under-rated show imho. It was fun and a great climate.
Hampton '85-'89. I don't think I saw a bad show ever at Hampton! Highlights were when they did the "formerly the warlocks" and seeing them jam on "so what" or try "stir it up" but it was all good.
