Odessa riff question

I was jamming this with a couple guys this week.

We played it in G...used the chords from ratdog.org songlist.

Is the basic riff after each line of lyrics walking up to G?.....down to G? up and down?

We tried it a bunch of ways but it was always wrong.

Any help is appreciated.
