Got back to NYC at 5 am and it was just off the charts. In any post Jerry configuration of any of the members, this was the sickest thing I've heard in years.
It was quite clearly the Bob Weir and Phil Lesh show. For you Weir tone lovers, Bobby drove this ship tonight with one guitar, the sunburst 335, and he was just unbelievable.
kreutzmann and hart were completely on point. kreutzmann did most of the kit work while hart concentrated solely on percussion. it was a very stripped down stage rig and the whole rhythm section reeked in tone and feel of the late 60's.
the amount of jamming and stretching out was stunning.
warren just laid back in the pocket as well as the piano player.
of the several sick highlights was the "lady finger" bridge in Saint Stephen. it was just Weir doing some of most exquisite chordal work I've ever heard out of him...
Can't say enough enough about Weir. The whole night he was turned around facing Phil, Billy, and Mickey. For most of the sick jams like in Slipknot, Playin, Unbroken, they all gathered in tight around the center of the stage. At some points it looked like a bunch of kids who just realized how good they sounded.
They took Slipknot into the ionosphere. Again, Weir with the heavy phase ala blues for allah. He was pushing them into some way outside chord structure and everyone just followed him into the wormhole.
Kudos to Warren for not killing it. He was the consumate sideman. He added where he could but I have to emphasize he really scaled it down.
Chimenti had a full set up on keys. Grand Piano, Hammond, the whole nine. Very cool player. Tasty break on the middle section of unbroken chain....
Last edit and side note: The Bryce Jordan Center is a drag. Security and the cops were pulling peeps left and right for smoking. And a slew of folks got arrested for trying to sneak onto the floor.
