Silvertone 1474 Amp!

Postby mkaufman » Sun Mar 29, 2009 5:37 pm

I picked up a Silvertone 1474 amp. It has the original matched pair of Jensen P12Q speakers. The left speaker sounds fine. The right speaker seems to have no sound coming out of it except if I play something with heavy bass. Then I get a bassy splat with lots of vibration. I checked the wiring and all looks ok. I suspect the speaker is blown.

Should I recone the speaker or replace it. If I recone it, who should do the work and what should I specify if I'm looking to restore it to original vintage spec?

Based on the vibration, etc., I'm thinking that it may be a voice coil issue. How does one know for sure? It that easy to repair?

btw...the speaker dates back to 1962.

tnx,
