Try overkill. Why anyone not playing a hockey rink would want something with so much power- and that weighs about triple of many other power amps, I'll never figure out. Bassists, maybe, but a guitarist in most settings can peel paint with about 1/3 of the wattage or less.

apparently one clue if it was a GD amp,.. all the case screws have locktite on them

This particular unit was supposedly on tour with the Grateful Dead for many years as a back up for the infamous Wall Of Sound. It is still in mint condition because the MC 2300's are so reliable that this one never got unboxed


Seems to imply it's still in its original packaging? Or that it at least was until the post-WOS sell-off.

This tidbit is kinda interesting:
I spoke with McIntosh labs product manager Ron Cornelius while he was in town and he said that these amps will actually push 450 watts per channel at the +3Db point.

since the gd bought directly from mcintosh. odds are mcintosh probably logged all serial numbers and it might be verifiable from them.
