Love this tune.
For whatever reason i can never get the intro riff working with the drummer.
Really pisses me off as its a great tune and the INTRO is holding me back !
Love the bending Jerry does in the solo ... very melodic and lyrical.

A very familiar hurdle to clear for this tune. You must be getting close!

My band's drummer rocks! Seriously. All day long he listens to Dead tunes and does "ear training". We hit this intro no problem. (unlike other tunes).
As we do it without thought, luckily, this is how my mind remembers what the ears tell it...

Code: Select all
Jerry E------------------------------------------------------
Jerry B------------------------------------------------------
Jerry G------------------------------------------------------
Jerry D---0-----0--------0--0---0--0-------------------------
Jerry A------2----2-0----------------------------------------
Drums ------------&------1-&-2-&--etc------------------------
Bobby B-------------------/7---------------------------------
Bobby G-------------------/7---------------------------------
Bobby  D------------------/7---------------------------------

The trick is that Jerry's first note starts on the 3, just like Jack Straw.
And the drums comes in on the 4's "and" with a beat or slight crash.

I think this is a common problem for musicians, especially drummers.

Knowing this sometimes makes it harder since you think more or makes it easier since it explains the nuance your ears hear.

Thoughts?!

I will try the " 3 " beat thing.
I don't know why it doesn't work at practice.
At home I get it going good ; at practice not so well.
LOL !
I do the riff at the 5th fret like in a vid i saw of Jerry doing it.
Its a real buzz kill when the intro is the stumbling block !
Jerry has a great sense of time and space ; me not so much.
