It's an open D with an alternating bass line on the D and A string. He does a little syncopated walk up on the A string at the tail end of each bar setting up for the new 1. The walk up is open A, B fretted at the second fret and the open D which hangs for a split second before you strum the whole chord.

Hope this made some sense. If you were here I'd show it to you in 3 seconds, no maybe 4....

OOOOOOH okay I get it now... does the same go with the A chords and D7?

What about the G's? just alternate the bass lines on G as well?
