I'm going to go out on a limb here and I hope I get some feedback, but Hunter S. Thompson and Don Johnson wrote the first script. It was originally written as a movie, but it never was considered for a movie. Instead they turned it into a show and Thompson has an appearance in the show and he helped a tiny bit by contributing to the overall show. We all know HST was a Grateful Dead/Jerry fan, so much respect. I'm willing to bet he had a little something to do with this
