Moving within the scale when it comes to guitar is
referred to as diatonic sequences.

This can be confusing to non-guitarists who learn
such fruitless terms as the "diatonic scale"
and other technically incorrect terms.

"Is this satanic music?"

"Naw, It's not cool enough."

A good practice routine should include exercises
that are not diatonic but greatly improve the
ability to work those scalar patterns.

Playing within the pattern can be simple, mathematic
melodic, etc.

Let's look at some sequences that will help in
a Mr. G context.

patterns of 4.

This is simple and increases the amount of notes played when moving across the board.

A Mixolydian A B C# D E F# G

example 1 A Mixolydian in patterns of 4 played
descending.

e-5-3-2------3-2--------2---------------------------
b--------5--------5-3------5-3-2--5-3-2------3-2----
g-----------------------------------------4-------4-2

"Drums, guitar and death, they finally got it right."

Patterns of 4 can ascend

e-----------------------------------------2--------2
b---------2-------2-3-------2-3-5-2-3-5-------3-5---
g----2-4----2-4---------4---------------------------
d-5-------------------------------------------------

Above is A Mixolydian in patterns of 4 ascending

"I like to blow up lizards."

"I like to burn things, heh heh heh heh."

Patterns of 4 can ascend while starting on the
next descending note in the scale with each pattern of 4.

A Dorian

e----7-8-10--------7-8------------7---------------
b-10---------8-10--------7-8-10----------7-8-10---
g-------------------------------------9-----------

As you can see patterns of 4 can be played in
many many different ways and be mixed with other
scalar sequence ideas.

"ummm, okay."

Patterns of 4 are endless and I can give some more
if you'd like but there is also 3rds and 4ths and
5ths and 6ths etc

G Ionian in 3rds descending

e-10-7-8------7------------------------------------
b---------10-----8--10-7--8------7-----------------
g-----------------------------9------7-------------

of course there is barely a limit to 3rds and
the ideas to sequence them.

These are some simple Mr.G type diatonic sequences
you can expand and re sequence in many ways.

If you'd like more let me know.

I had a 150 page book years back I used to sell
filled with numerous Mr.G type diatonic sequences
that I wrote.

If you'd like we can also get into Mr.G scale
additions and common chromatic within the scale
note runs he uses, leading tones, etc.

Well moving within scale isn't really moving outside
those patterns.

Of course you can add those outside notes.

And an efficient picking technique is vidal.

I can go over picking techniques.

The idea is to move within the scale.

specifically in your case to move within those
5 patterns that you've done so well with.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&yahooo!!&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Some of the quick ideas presented above were in the
vein of something you Mr.G would noodle with...

These ideas really need to be broken down and used
for all the patterns.

and therefore all the modes, keys, etc.

A fantastic thing to do and it's what I have personally done and Mr.G has done as well.

Purchase a notebook and write out all the different
moving within the scale ideas presented above in
different keys, modes,

It is so important to get the visual look at it
in tab form.

Later on the notebook will become refuse because the
ideas will be hardwired in your fingers.

Be creative and come up with your own "moving within
the scale" ideas.

I won't leave you hangin' waldo cuz you came for some
help and some ideas.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Above in previous threads thier are a handful of ideas about patterns of 4.

Patterns of 4 is something that one can relate to
Mr.G's playing as it is something he fooled with alot.

#####################################################

What are patterns of 4?

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Well thier simply playing 4 notes in a pattern.

The sky is the limit after that.

And the ideas can be put into patterns of another #.

but patterns of 4 is what your looking for and is
something Mr.G loved to do.

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Now these patterns of 4 can start on a different
note descending everytime or ascending everytime or
be mixed in with other "moving within the scale"
ideas, etc etc etc.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I've presented some patterns of 4 ideas already and
I can present some more.

but if your taught the ideas behind it.

You'll be much better.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Now 3rds were covered briefly I believe in an earlier

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

What is 3rd's?

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Well I hate to bog anyone down with musical jargon
or labels.

but

####################################################

3rds in this case is simply playing one note and
skipping the other.

I have discussed tertian harmony and how 3rds are
predomiant in American music in a previous thread,

It's sort of like leap frogging.

Let's take a look

C Ionian C D E F G A B

C Ionian in 3rds.

CE/DF/EG/FA/GB/AC/BD/

Above we see C Ionian in 3rds stacked in groups of
two.

It would be best for you to write this out in
a notebook in different keys, modes etc.

to get it under your belt.

A great way to check your work is to put it in
groups of two like above.

You see the first note of the first group starts on
C and the first note of the second group starts on
D etc.

The second note in each group moves along the same way.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Of course 3rds can be ascended and descended starting
on different notes and mixed with other ideas etc.

3rds will present alot of opportunities for arpeggios

Mr.G often played alot of arpeggios.

Patterns of 4 and 3rds are great ways to work
within his style.

4ths can also be used in some ways but not as much
as the above.

working on 5ths, 6ths and 7ths would not sound like
Mr.G but it would be worth your time to put into
them a little as well.

I will post the Touch of Grey solo as it includes
many of his stylistic points.

I will go through each portion and show what notes
he is playing, what chords he is playing over, and
give explanations for each portion.

This will be beneficial.

I could give more examples but I wanted you to get
some understandings in.

Break down the examples in previous threads and
if you have a question I will answer.

Well we went over 3rd's ideas...

and ya probably came up with a bunch of combinations
to write out.

e-----12-10-13-12-15-13-17-15-19-----------------
b-13---------------------------------------------

Above we see C Ionian in 3rds ascending, now the
line is mostly on one string to emphasize the use
of playing in both directions, not just across the
neck.

gunrunfunbunsunvancanbanpanhitfitbitpitgeneva

You really just want to come up with different
ideas and especially just get the motion to be

e--------------10----------10-12-------10-12-13-10-
b-13-10-12-13------12-13-----------13--------------

e-12-13-15-12-13-15-17-13-15-17-19-----------------

Above we see a 3rd descending then asending 2 scale
steps in C Ionian C D E F G A B

canthemachineoftimestoptosparethelivesoftheonethatkee

6th's are another sequence to study.

Mr. G uses them often,

e---------------------------------------------------
b-----5------6--------8------10------8-----6-----5--
g---------------------------------------------------
d--5------7------9-------10------9------7-----5-----

Above we see 6ths in G Mixoldian G A B C D E F

6ths is the same as 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths.

e---------------------------------------------------
b-----5-------3------2------0------2------3---------
d---------------------------------------------------
g--5------4-------2------0------2-----4-------------

above is G Ionian in 6ths.

It's simply moving along in the scale

C Ionian C D E F G A B

CA/DB/EC/FD/GE/AF/BG/

Taking the first note and then hopping on the 6th in
the scale from that note ascending/descending starting on the next ascending note/starting on the
next descending note, mix and match it's almost
limitless.

Are ya fooling around with different sequences??

Why just sit and wait for the apocalypse when you
can......................

okay we'll sit around and wait.

Here's another interesting idea to springboard ya
in some new directions while we do.....

A 3rd descending, a 3rd descending, 1 scale step
ascending, 1 scale step ascending.

e-8-5-------5---------------------------------------
b------6-8-----6-----5-6----------------------------
g-----------------7--------7-4-5-7-4-------4--------
d-------------------------------------5-7-----5-----
a------------------------------------------------7-8

Above we see this idea executed in C Ionian.

e-10-7--------7--------------------------------------
b-------8-10----8--------8---------------------------
g------------------9-10-----9------7-9---------------
d------------------------------10--------------------

On November 13th Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his residence.

That request came from his wife.
